My name is Megen Cummings and I was born and raised on a farm in a small town in South Jersey. Since I was 5 years old, I always wanted to be a veterinarian. My family raised all types of animals and we held petting zoos and pony rides for all different occasions. I was always riding horses, playing with the dogs, or showing my sheep in 4H. I always had a deep unconditional love for animals and helping others.
A Little About Me
I graduated from Pennsville High School in 2007, then went right for my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at Stockton University. During my time in high school and undergrad I stayed very active in the community volunteering with the American Red Cross, The Humane Society, Meals on Wheels and more. I also played soccer for over 10 years and stayed involved in extracurricular activities. I graduated from Stockton in 2011 and moved to Philadelphia. I received my Master’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science at Drexel University College of Medicine. After this rigorous two-year program, I received my acceptance letter from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. My dream was now coming true. Therefore, I packed the few suitcases that I had, and moved down south with my boxer King. We were set to conquer the world. Mississippi was a culture shock for sure, however, those four years were probably the best four years of my life. The friends I met became family and the college became my home. After a very long four years I graduated with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine(DVM) in 2017.
One huge decision in my life, that I have to speak briefly about, was the Health Professional Scholarship I received in 2015 from the Army. Upon graduation with my DVM, I commissioned as a US Army Captain and was assigned to my first duty station at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, CA. I became Officer in Charge (OIC) of a Veterinary Treatment Facility and had the honor of serving my country, and taking care of the Military Workings Dogs and Calvary Horses. I also had the opportunity of being stationed at Joint Base Lewis McCord in Washington State. My four years in the US Army was a journey and one that I will be forever thankful for. My adventures continued after the military where I traveled across the US and started doing relief work as a veterinarian. I worked in emergency, general practice, shelters, urgent cares, zoos, and even with large animal. During this time, I knew I was going to start my own practice and be able to care for all animals.
So why Kings Court?
King was my very best friend who went through absolutely everything with me. He was with me during all my college years and time in the service. He lived with me in MS, CA, WA and traveled the entire United States with me. He was my world and I miss him every single day. I am truly blessed to have his daughter, Duchess and his grandson Duke with me now. King is a legend and will always live on. Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me.
Dr. Meg
During my senior year of undergrad, I applied to veterinary schools; I felt so confident that I would get accepted. Little did I know I was far off from getting into a Vet school. Therefore, I went and earned my Master’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science.
It turned out I wasn’t the only one in the small class that also applied for vet school and didn’t get in. Together we conquered our Master’s program, lived in Philly, and developed long-lasting friendships. TODAY, my group of friends from that program are all veterinarians!! Whoot Whoot!! MLAS! They were some of the best years of my life.
The scope of my experience encompasses a four-year stint as a Captain in the United States Army Veterinary Corps. Two of those years, I was the Officer in Charge (OIC) at the Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) at Fort Irwin National Training Center in the Mohave Desert. Along with also being the OIC at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Barstow, CA. As the OIC, I oversaw a team of between 2-20 Soldiers at any given time. I directed comprehensive veterinary medical and surgical care, and managed the VTF. My team and I delivered care to more than 5,000 patients on an annual basis. With a primary focus on providing specialized care and treatments for the Military Working Dogs, Mounted Color Guard Horses, and the 11th Army Calvary Regimen Horses. Also, I had a significant importance in the food mission, regarding audits and inspections on military installations.
I am currently doing veterinarian relief work in general practice and emergency. I mainly see small animals such as cats and dogs. However, whenever I get the opportunity to do so, I see exotics and pocket pets. Also, doing relief, I have been doing a lot of traveling and meeting new people. Currently, I just took up telemedicine with Vetster, that has opened many windows to new ways to practice vet med.
The backbone of my success stems from my commitment to excellence, joined with a deep understanding of patient needs, as cultivated over four years as a Veterinarian, along with my military service, overseas missions in underdeveloped countries. I am known as a trusted leader who is willing to go above and beyond to improve health care delivery.
Through my military service and many years of hands-on animal care coupled with my lifelong love of animals, I am a trusted leader and animal enthusiast who is dedicated to fostering world-class animal care.
There is nothing I enjoy more than making a difference and achieving positive results in animal health care. No doubt, growing up on our family farm heavily influenced my desire to pursue a career as a Veterinarian.
Born to be a Vet, I genuinely enjoy delivering first-rate care that helps animals thrive. At the intersection of health care and my patients, there exist enormous challenges. That’s where I can be counted on to make the tough decisions that save animals’ lives.
